Beautiful 19th Century French Faux Tortoiseshell Black Lace & Sequin Hand Fan

BEAUTIFUL 19TH CENTURY FRENCH FAUX TORTOISESHELL BLACK LACE & SEQUIN HAND FAN. This is a beautiful fine quality Mid Victorian French faux Tortoiseshell Black Lace & Sequin Hand Fan in original Box, this rare fan dates to circa 1860 making it over 150 years old, though this could be earlier i just dont know. This rare French Fan is of a nice size and stunning with its Black lace body which has the most wonderful hand stictched sequins sewn on to create such a stunning design set against the wonderful rich black lace, it has a timeless elegance, the decoration is absolutely beautiful, each sequin is crafted in a metal as this was an earlier form of sequin, (the sequins are NOT plastic) each sequin has been sewn on by hand to create such a very pretty ladies hand fan, to the base of the fan it is mounted in a very pretty faux Tortoiseshell, with the faux Tortoiseshell to both ends, it is so very pretty, it has 16 sticks again crafted in faux Tortoiseshell, this comes complete with its original tooled faux leather box, it has the most lovely rich green colour with gold tooling to the top, inside the box it has the most wonderful pale pink interior, the box itself tapers to one end slightly so the fan can sit snugly inside. T he quality of the craftsmanship is superb as you would expect, this wonderful detailed Fan would have once belonged to a very wealthy Victorian Lady and been used most days, if this could talk i can just imagine what fascinating stories itcould tell, it is so very tactile and once held has the most wonderful feel.

This will add something very special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice. There is something about antique hand fans. In Frenchthat I adore and the more that I read about them, the more interested I become. In earlier times hand fans were used to communicate. And in fact, the role of the fan was not only for cooling, or as a fly swatter or fire-bellows.

It was also the supreme instrument of silent communication. As Sir Richard Steele, in the Tatler of 4 August 1709, wrote: You may observe in all public Assemblies the sexes seems to separate themselves and to attack each other with eye-shot, that is the time when the fan, which is the armour of woman, is of most use in her defence, for our minds are constructed by the waving of that little instrument, and our thoughts appear in composure or agitation according to the motion of it. In earlier times, an infinite variety of meaning could be found in the motion and flutter of a hand fan. Carrying in the right hand.... Carrying in the left hand, open....

Come and talk to me. Carrying in the right hand, in front of the face....

Carrying in the left hand, in front of the face.... Clasping the hands under the open fan.... Forgive me, I pray you. Drawing across the cheek:I love you. Drawing across the forehead:You have changed.

Gazing pensively at the shut fan.... Why do you misunderstand me? Letting it rest on the right cheek.... With the little finger extended.... Placing it on the left ear....

I wish to get rid of you. Shut fully-opened fan very slowly.... I promise to marry you. Shut fan held to the heart....

You have won my love. Shut fan resting on the right eye.... When may I be allowed to see you?

Touching the unfolded fan in the act of waving.... I long always to be near you. I wish to speak to you. Twirling in the left hand....

Length of fan is 8.5 inches not including the holder to the base... When open 16 inches across. For its age its in wonderful condition with just some sequins missing, just mentioned for accracy.
